When I sat down to make this piece I wanted to create something that included all of the places in Richmond that are dear to me. This snapshot of the river includes not just landmarks but memories that have been made in this city that means so much to me, my family, and others that call Richmond home. The piece’s orientation can rotate to admire Richmond’s different views. The tapestry can be hung portrait style, where the northern part of the river flows from the top to the south–beginning with Cary Town and ending at the Capital. If the piece is rotated clockwise the viewer’s attention is brought to the Science Museum and the Main Street Station. If the piece is rotated counter-clockwise one can gaze at the Japanese Garden’s bridge at Maymont and St. John’s Church. The lifeblood of this piece and of Richmond is the River. It brings rhythm and movement to the composition. It brings unity and is the quintessence of the city, where our community and memories flourish.
